Siemens and Google Cloud cooperate

Google Cloud and Siemens are cooperating to optimize manufacturing processes using AI-based solutions. To this end, Siemens wants to integrate Google Cloud technology for data and artificial intelligence into its factory automation solutions.

Siemens sees itself as a leader in the further development of industrial automation and software, while Google Cloud sees itself as a leader in data analysis, AI and machine learning. The cooperation that has now been announced is intended to combine the best of both worlds and bring AI/ML to the manufacturing industry on a large scale.

Industrial processes are increasingly data-driven. In the manufacturing industry, older and different software applications are often used to analyze plant data. This is resource-intensive and often requires manual updates to ensure accuracy. Because AI projects are used by many companies as a "stand-alone" solution in manufacturing, manufacturers struggle to implement AI solutions on a large scale in their global operations.

By combining Google Cloud's data cloud and AI and machine learning capabilities with Siemens' factory automation portfolio, manufacturers can unify their factory data. They can also use this data to run cloud-based AI/ML models and deploy machine learning algorithms. This enables applications such as visual quality control of products or predictive maintenance of systems and production lines.

Using artificial intelligence in production facilities and integrating it into automation and their networks is a complex task that requires highly specialized expertise and innovative products such as Siemens Industrial Edge. The aim of the collaboration is to facilitate the use and scalability of AI in operations in conjunction with Industrial Edge and its management.
"The potential of artificial intelligence to radically change the manufacturing sector is far from exhausted. Many manufacturers are still stuck in AI 'pilot projects' - we want to change that," said Axel Lorenz, VP Control at Siemens Digital Industries, Factory Automation. "The combination of Google Cloud's AI/ML technology with Siemens' Industrial Edge and Industrial Operation solutions can significantly change the manufacturing industry."
