Jugend forscht 2011, Benedikt Gröver, special telescope
© Stiftung Jugend forscht e.V.
Benedikt Gröver studied the remains of a supernova in the year 1054, using a special telescope to split the light of the Crab Nebula into its color components. This made it possible to determine the chemical elements in the Crab Nebula, measure the size and distance of the Crab Nebula and estimate the propagation speed of the explosion. The young astronomer won first prize in the field of Earth and space sciences, an invitation to a research stay in Rhode Island, USA, and to the fall conference of the Astronomische Gesellschaft e.V. (Astronomical Society).
