A floor consists of hexagonal, single-colored tiles - how many colors are needed so that tiles of the same color do not touch? The US mathematician Edward Nelson investigated this question in the 1950s. Fabian Henneke, Danial Sanusi and Xianghui Zhong (from left to right) - the winners in the field of mathematics/computer science - took up the thread and expanded the problem. They investigated abstract geometric shapes that extend into significantly more than three dimensions. The three young researchers also won an invitation to the 23rd European competition for young researchers.
