Apples produce the flammable, colorless gas ethylene when they ripen. How much of this gas is produced depends on the diffusion of the gas and whether the apple is damaged. Charlotte Decker investigated this formation and ripening process and the effects of the gas on fruit stored next to the apples, and won a prize in the biology subject area.
