Hyperspectral camera solution in industrial design

Imec, a research and innovation center for nanoelectronics and digital technologies, and Ximea, a German camera manufacturer, have announced their deepened collaboration that has resulted in a series of new hyperspectral cameras.

The cameras, called 'xiSpec2', have high spectral fidelity to meet the needs of the rapidly evolving machine vision market, according to the companies. The intensified collaboration between Imec and Ximea will accelerate the adoption of hyperspectral imaging in a wide range of applications, including crop monitoring in agriculture, quality and freshness control in the food industry, augmented reality for surgery, robotic guidance in industrial production facilities, outdoor predictive maintenance, biometrics, forensics or environmental monitoring.

Hyperspectral imaging captures light from a combination of spectral bands and provides valuable data on the non-visible aspects of the objects and surfaces being examined, such as their (bio)chemical composition. For the past five years, Ximea has been commercializing Imec's hyperspectral technology in its 'xiSpec' cameras, the world's smallest spectral cameras. These cameras have the ability to capture spectral data at real-time video rates, opening up a wide range of new applications by enabling wearable devices, robotics and integration into other systems where the traditional use of line scan sensors is too difficult.

With the 'xiSpec2' camera, Imec and Ximea are further expanding the applicability of hyperspectral imaging. Imec is targeting the medical, agricultural and industrial imaging markets and is taking an active role in the collaboration. Ximea and imec have optimized the camera design to improve the spectral quality of the captured data and allow customers to tailor the image quality and spectral range to their application. In addition, the new software enables applications in more demanding, non-standard industrial environments.

The 'xiSpec2' series consists of three standard cameras, whereby solutions tailored to the customer's needs can be derived.
