Check weld seams for defects with AI

© Fraunhofer IPT

The International Center for Networked, Adaptive Production (ICNAP) of the three Aachen-based Fraunhofer Institutes is presenting an AI-supported analysis system for visual quality control at SPS.

This allows weld seams on battery cell modules to be checked for defects in real time using deep learning. In the use case shown, the battery cell module is manually placed under a camera and a photo is taken, which is then analyzed by a pre-trained deep learning model. The artificial intelligence independently recognizes defects during ongoing production that would otherwise have to be identified by trained specialists. The new system from Fraunhofer, on the other hand, displays the defect detection immediately in real time in color - red for a defective product and green for a flawless product. This allows defects to be detected during the production process and rejects to be avoided at an early stage.
