Software for faster market launch

According to the manufacturer Toshiba, the 'MCU Motor Studio v 3.0' software is designed to simplify the commissioning of sensorless motors. The new 'Motor Tuning Studio' enables automatic parameter tuning in real time

Toshiba Electronics Europe has updated and expanded its design framework for brushless DC motors (BLDCs) and permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSM). New functions have been added that automatically detect the motor parameters and optimize the settings. The tools accelerate software development for sensorless drives, for example variable speed drives, and thus shorten the time to market.

To optimize the settings for field-oriented control (FOC), the current version of MCU Motor Studio (MMS v 3.0) uses the flux observer method to estimate the rotor position. The Flux Observer combines the estimated α- and β-axis components and calculates the rotor position from them. This eliminates the effort of determining the initial PI gain parameters that conventional PI control loops require for position estimation, so that application development can be started quickly.

Complementing MMS 3.0 is the 'Motor Tuning Studio' (MTS v 1.0) software - a new tool that simplifies the acquisition of motor parameters, according to the manufacturer. MTS consists of a firmware that is loaded into the motor MCU and an associated PC-based tool. The firmware determines the rotor resistance, the d/q-axis inductance, the moment of inertia and the magnetic flux. MTS was developed for Toshiba's TMPM4K and TMPM3H microcontrollers and also supports software vector control during normal operation of the motor drive.

The accompanying MTS PC tool controls the Flux Observer and is used to calculate and tune the PI gain parameters for current control, speed control and position estimation. The tool creates a C header file with these tuned parameters and generates the XML initialization file required for motor evaluation and drive development with MMS 3.0.
