Kaspersky warns of critical vulnerabilities

Security specialist Kaspersky has analyzed which industrial control systems are accessible via the Internet worldwide. Critical vulnerabilities were identified - at Siemens, Schneider Electric and other automation technology providers.

Regular integrity checks for control units and special security network monitoring minimize the risk of successful attacks, even if some vulnerable nodes cannot be patched or removed.

Kaspersky 's global investigation for 2015 reveals the following situation: A total of 188,019 hosts of ICS components were identified in 170 countries that were available via the Internet. Most of the remotely accessible ICS computers (hosts) are located in the USA (57,417 / 30.5%), Germany (26,142 / 13.9%), Spain (11,264 / 5.9%) and France (10,578 / 5.6%).

"Our research shows: The larger the infrastructures of industrial control systems, the greater the risk of sensitive security vulnerabilities," says Andrey Suvorov, Head of Critical Infrastructure Protection at Kaspersky Lab. "However, this is not due to individual software or hardware providers. ICS environments are inherently a mixture of different interconnected components. Many of them are connected to the Internet and raise security issues."

The detailed ICS report(Part 1 and Part 2) is available for download in the Whitepaper section.
