Deutsche Telekom expands its security portfolio

93% of medium-sized and large German companies have already been exposed to IT attacks designed to spy on or damage them. Deutsche Telekom has come to this conclusion and wants to counteract this with eight security solutions.

22% of companies struggle with external attacks on a daily basis, 19% once or several times a week. In 40% of companies, spending on IT security to protect against hacker attacks has increased significantly in the past year, according to the telecommunications group Deutsche Telekom in its latest "Security Report Decision Makers 2016". The company wants to expand its range of security solutions and presented eight new security solutions at the 'Magenta Security' conference in Frankfurt, which are designed to help counter external cyber attacks. These include both Telekom's own developments as well as offerings in cooperation with manufacturers from the security technology sector.

The new solutions in detail:

APT Protect Pro (Cloud based)

Together with the Israeli security provider Check Point, Deutsche Telekom is launching a solution on the market to ensure that users only have emails with secure content in their inbox. This solution is designed to block so-called 'Advanced Persistent Threats' (APT for short) - previously unknown attacks that are contained in emails and their attachments. This means that existing security hubs in company networks that do not yet have an APT function can simply be supplemented via a cloud solution from Telekom's data centers, which it claims are highly secure.

APT Protect Pro (on Premise)

With the 'APT Protect Pro (on Premise)' solution, Telekom, in collaboration with the American telecommunications company Cisco Systems, aims to provide "state-of-the-art protection" for IT - even for components that are already installed. For customers with an existing Cisco infrastructure in the security hub, the functions of 'APT Protect Pro (on Premis)' can be implemented by upgrading existing modules. The new offering is designed to render classic attack scenarios and new zero-day attacks harmless.

Browser in the Box

Browsers are by far the most common gateway for malware. Together with the Munich-based company Rohde & Schwarz, Telekom wants to put a stop to this. The 'Browser in the Box' runs on a separate virtual machine with its own operating system. This is intended to prevent elements that spread malicious code from getting onto the computer and into the company network. Unknown threats (zero-day exploits) should also be blocked.

Cyber Defense as a Service

With the 'Arcsight' system from Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Deutsche Telekom is adding a comprehensive security service to its portfolio as a pay-as-you-go variant under the name 'Cyber Defense as a Service'. This means that the customer pays for the cloud service from Deutsche Telekom's data centers according to daily consumption - without a minimum contract term. The service is provided by employees of Telekom's own Security Operation Center.

Identity Protect Pro

If it is not clear who is authorized to do what, when, where and in what function on a certain end device or with a certain service, the gates are wide open for successful attacks on networked systems and applications. Together with the manufacturer ForgeRock, Deutsche Telekom will therefore be offering the cloud-based Identity & Access Management System 'Identity Protect Pro' in future. The package includes services for managing user IDs and access authorizations for the customer's applications and company resources.

Offline Scanner Pro

The overwhelming proportion of attacks on companies could be prevented if software was always up to date, according to Telefkom. To ensure that IT managers always know the patch status of their computers, the telecommunications group has developed the 'Offline Scanner Pro': The application determines the patch status of a server without having access to the machine itself. It is designed to be easy to use, even with little knowledge of the system.

Vulnerability Scan as a Service

Together with the company Qualys, Deutsche Telekom is offering a new service that determines the security status of corporate IT: 'Vulnerability Scan as a Service' examines IP network components for vulnerabilities via their access points - i.e. IP addresses. Up to one hundred thousand or more IT components are automatically scanned for security vulnerabilities and compliance via the IP addresses visible on the internet or intranet. The scanner automatically presents the results in a clear report. The hosting of the solution in Deutsche Telekom's data center is particularly innovative: all data remains in Germany and only the customer should have access to it.

Sealed cloud

With the "sealed cloud" from software partner Uniscon, Telekom intends to offer a patented data center technology from its data centers from March 2017. The so-called 'iDGard service' from Uniscon will be used. The aim is to enable security when exchanging documents, in data rooms and in document mobility, as well as a secure chat function.
