Converting machines optimized

Siemens is expanding its 'Simotion' motion control solutions for converting machines to include prismatic winding and Learning Error Compensation (LECo).

When winding on non-circular cylindrical, e.g. elliptical bodies, changes in web length occur between the material contact point and the deflection roller. Previously, these were compensated for mechanically or by varying the winding speed. The motion control solution 'Prismatic winding' calculates the contact points of the material on the deflection roller and winding body cyclically in advance and feeds these into the control system. The self-learning LECo application replaces previous dynamic position controllers, which only correct process axis position errors with a delay. The new solution, on the other hand, quickly detects deviations through permanent process axis monitoring, calculates the value to be pre-controlled based on the tracking error and feeds this into the control system in the next cycle. This means that deviations are largely compensated for after the first cycle. In the subsequent cycles, a learning algorithm constantly monitors the compensation result and refines the drive control.
