At the Mobile World Congress 2024, Deutsche Telekom is presenting a visionary AI phone concept together with Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. and Brain.ai. An assistant based on artificial intelligence replaces the countless apps on the smartphone. Like a concierge, the assistant understands the user's wishes and takes care of the details.

"Book me a flight to the quarter-finals" could be the voice command to which the intelligent assistant listens and responds. The showcase uses specific examples to demonstrate how an AI smartphone can make life easier when planning trips, shopping, creating videos or editing photos. This is made possible by a digital assistant from Deutsche Telekom. Using AI, it takes over the functions of a wide range of apps and can perform all daily tasks that would usually require several applications on the device.

The smartphone can be controlled intuitively by voice and text. "Artificial intelligence and so-called Large Language Models (LLM) will soon be an integral part of mobile devices," Jon Abrahamson, Chief Product & Digital Officer at Deutsche Telekom, is convinced. "We will use them to improve and simplify the lives of our customers. Our vision is a magenta concierge for an app-free smartphone. A real everyday companion that fulfills needs and simplifies digital life."

Real application examples

For the showcase, real use cases were integrated into Telekom's T Phone, which is already available. Together with Brain.ai, a pioneer in generative interfaces, an app-free interface was created to intuitively control the AI. Depending on the context, it independently selects the appropriate applications. This allows users to focus on what they want instead of how they get it. The AI is located in the cloud. On the one hand, this ensures an authentic user experience and, on the other, keeps the costs for smartphones low.

In cooperation with Qualcomm, Deutsche Telekom is also showcasing another variant of an AI smartphone based on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 Reference Design. In this high-performance device, most of the AI processing takes place on the device itself. This makes the AI particularly fast, energy-efficient and individual for each user.

At the MWC, the partners are presenting pure prototypes that are intended to show a possible future and bring it to life. It will still be a while before customers can buy them in stores.
