The current Gigabit modular switch from Phoenix Contact supports the Layer 3 function in order to route communication between individual subnets. By inserting an SD flash card with a Layer 3 license in combination with the Layer 3 firmware, the switch supports port-based routing, static routing or the VRRP protocol (Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol) for redundant router applications.
An existing Layer 2 Gigabit Modular Switch can be upgraded to a Layer 3 device using the SD card. The switch configuration can still be saved on the card. For use in the production backbone, the switch supports all common Gigabit and Fast Ethernet transmission standards, standard IT protocols and the Profinet and Ethernet/IP automation protocols. In addition to the integrated Gigabit ports, it can also accommodate interface modules for up to 16 additional 100 Mbit/s ports.
