Industrial robot supports aircraft assembly: The Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW) was awarded third prize for its 'Jilas' (Jig Less Airplane Assembly) project. Realized as part of an EU project, a force-controlled industrial robot is used here as a universal assembly tool for fixture-free aircraft assembly. The semi-automatic system requires neither task-specific software components nor knowledge of robot programming. 'Jilas' is designed to ensure safe human-robot interaction: the robot supports the user during lifting and manipulation. This partial automation avoids consequential damage and makes physically demanding tasks possible even for people with disabilities or little muscle strength.
