Sensor-Technik Wiedemann offers the option of updating the controls of mobile machinery in the field using a USB stick. This allows software updates to be installed in the field without additional operating devices. All that is required is a USB stick with the Update Data Package (UDaP) and an 'ESX-3Xx' controller with the 'EB07' expansion board. The expansion board is equipped with an independent 400 MHz CPU and a Linux kernel including 1 Gbyte of data flash. In addition to USB, it offers further communication interfaces such as RS232/CAN/Ethernet (10/100 Mbit/s). Before the update process can be carried out, the application developer must create an update data package with the help of the Update Data Generator (UDaG). The UDaG provides all components such as scripts and programs that are relevant for creating a UDaP. The UDaP contains the application-specific updated program as well as additional help files to provide automated security mechanisms, such as the unique identity/integrity of the UDaP.
