KW-Software has ported the SIL3-certified IEC 61131 runtime system SafeOS to the PowerPC platform, which is often used in embedded systems with high performance or temperature range requirements. The runtime environment executes pure machine code on two diversely developed programs. This ensures extremely short response times for the safety function. The safe runtime system achieves SIL 3 on a dual-channel processor architecture. The diversity of the compiled user program also enables it to be used on a single processor core. With moderate hardware requirements, for example an external watchdog, certification up to SIL2 is then possible, as is prescribed for many safety functions in the transport sector. SafeOS is scalable and therefore suitable for both small (footprint less than 10 KByte) and large safety controllers.
