Strengthening fiber optic cable production in Germany and Europe
The production of fiber optic cables in Germany has fallen by over 43% in the last ten years. In order to avoid long-term strategic dependencies, the ZVEI is calling for the maintenance and expansion of industrial capacities for network components in Germany and Europe.
Around half of all fiber optic cables are now produced in China. Europe currently only accounts for around 15 percent of global production. In view of geopolitical developments and growing security requirements, the ZVEI emphasizes the urgency of a resilient and sovereign communications infrastructure. Fiber optic cables must not only be operated reliably, but also come from secure and sustainable production processes in order to ensure the stability of supply chains.
"Germany and Europe are leaders in fiber optic technology, but without in-house production, there is a risk of losing know-how and innovative strength," warns Sarah Bäumchen, Managing Director at ZVEI. "A strong industrial base is crucial for the resilience of our communication networks. If manufacturing moves abroad, we become dangerously dependent. That is why production and R&D locations must be secured and expanded. We must not relinquish our technological leadership and thus a bargaining chip."
