Modern AI-based robotics

At automatica, the Munich Institute of Robotics and Machine Intelligence (MIRMI) of the Technical University of Munich (TUM) will be showcasing the diversity of its own robotics and AI research, which is also integrated into a powerful supra-regional ecosystem, not least through the Robotics Institute Germany (RIG) coordinated by TUM.

For the first time, the Technical University of Munich (TUM) and the Robotics Institute Germany (RIG) are appearing side by side at Automatica. Under the umbrella of the high-tech platform munich_i, TUM's integrated institute MIRMI, which specializes in robotics and AI, will provide a multifaceted look at the practical side of things. The 25 or so demos on site include a mobile environmental laboratory equipped with a drone, submarine and small land robot, exosuits that support the upper body or legs, and start-ups such as SmartAIs, which use AI to help blind people find their way around. Two of MIRMI's strategic topics are of particular interest here: geriatronics and the question of how technology can support people in care and in old age, and the AI.factory, which deals with AI and robotics in the production environment. There are also a number of start-ups that are supported by the MIRMI incubator robo.innovate.

Stage program with TUM researchers

The stage organized by the Robotics Institute Germany (RIG Stage) will focus on the topics of environment and mobility, health, work and young talent. MIRMI is represented here with many speakers and panelists, including MIRMI Director and RIG Coordinator Prof. Angela Schoellig and MIRMI Executive Director Prof. Lorenzo Masia. Ethics Professor Alena Buyx and Professor of Science and Technology Research Ruth Müller will address the topic of responsibility in automation, while robo.innovate Manager Nicole Ebner and MIRMI Executive Director Prof. Eckehard Steinbach will bring start-ups to the stage. They will be joined by researchers from RIG partner universities, who will present some of the RIG research clusters that have just been approved.

Robothon at the munich_i

The Robothon will take place for the fourth time in 2025. At this year's robotics competition, the international teams of researchers will focus on evaluating the agility and responsiveness of their robot platform. This involves tasks that need to be completed in electronic waste disposal. The teams solve the standard task and then demonstrate the capabilities of their robot with their own devices in the Bring-Your-Own-Device-Challenge. A jury of experts from industry and research will evaluate the teams. Eight teams from Germany, Ireland, India and the United Arab Emirates are taking part in the competition. The award ceremony will take place on June 27. The winning teams will receive a total of 10,000 euros.
