International Bionic Award presented

This year's International Bionic Award from the Schauenburg Foundation goes to a young French scientist. Julien Dupeyroux receives the 5000 euro award for his research work on an autonomously navigating robot.

The aim of Dupeyroux's research was to build a robot that mimics the biological functions observed in the foraging behavior of desert ants. These functions include the acquisition and processing of visual information and relative navigation based on this information, also known as path integration. Dupeyroux's research now makes it possible for a six-legged robot called 'AntBot' to navigate autonomously and without the use of GPS in an unknown outdoor environment - just like the desert ants of the genus Cataglyphis do. Dupeyroux impressed the international jury of experts with his idea and its implementation, which epitomizes lateral thinking in bionics.

Prof. Dr. Antonia B. Kesel from Bremen University of Applied Sciences and Chair of the VDI Bionics Department emphasizes: "The highlight of Julien Dupeyroux's research results is that a bio-inspired navigation system has been developed here that makes it possible to navigate precisely even in the smallest of spaces - something that is not possible with current systems. This now opens up a wide range of applications for small and micro robots."

The International Bionic Award of the Schauenburg Foundation in the Stifterverband is presented by the VDI Society Technologies of Life Sciences (TLS). It has been sponsored by the Schauenburg Foundation since 2008. This was established in 1986 by Hans-Georg Schauenburg, the founder of the Schauenburg Group, which operates in Mülheim an der Ruhr, and is administered in trust by the Stifterverband. With this prize, the Schauenburg Foundation and the VDI aim to promote practice-oriented research results and development work as well as innovations by young scientists in the field of bionics
