Plastics processor invests in start-up

Igus has invested in the Hamburg-based start-up Cirplus. The companies are pursuing a shared vision of closing the plastics loop and initiating a revolution in the recycling trade for technical and standard thermoplastics.

With their cooperation, Igus and Cirplus are jointly setting the course for the next level of digital recycling trade in technical and standard plastics. In the picture: Michael Blass, Managing Director e-chain systems at Igus (left) and Christian Schiller, Managing Director at Cirplus.

With the "Chainge" program, Igus has been enabling customers to have used energy chains recycled independently of the manufacturer since 2019. The "Chainge" online platform was launched in October 2022 to provide easy digital access to recycling. The marketplace can also be used to transfer previously unconsidered technical plastics into the circular economy. Processing companies can also purchase recycled plastics with guaranteed quality standards. Igus has now invested in the circular start-up cirplus to further advance the digital circular economy.

Cirplus is primarily active in the markets for standard thermoplastics. The Hamburg-based start-up offers disposal companies, recyclers and product manufacturers a digital marketplace through which they can purchase standardized recyclates worldwide in a secure, traceable and cost-efficient manner. The team of technology and digital experts is thus promoting the networking of the plastics and recycling industries. In addition, Cirplus initiated the DIN SPEC 91446 and DIN SPEC 91481 standards as the world's first standards for high-quality plastics recycling. The motivation was to establish reliable and transparent supply chains for plastic recyclates by combining digitalization and standardization. DIN SPEC 91446 was also awarded the DIN Prize 2022 by the German Institute for Standardization in the categories of climate protection and innovation. The common goal of making the regenerative use of plastics easier than ever before brings Igus and Cirplus together.

With Cirplus, Igus has gained a partner for the digital trade of standard recyclates. In future, customers will benefit from a network that links the recycling trade of technical and standard thermoplastics and makes it possible to obtain everything transparently from a single source.
