TSN/A Conference 2023

Meinrad Happacher,

On the way into practice

The TSN/A Conference will take place for the 8th time on September 27 and 28. Over the years, this conference has developed into the world's most important event in the TSN environment and brings together experienced experts and interested users.

The presentations at the conference reflect the current trends and topics in the industry.

Standards and profiles

Standards are the basis of everything - so there will once again be a great deal of interest in the updates on ongoing standardization. However, there will not only be an overview of updates from the IEEE 802.1 TSN working group; related standardization groups such as the IETF (DetNet), 3GPP (5G) and IEEE 802.11 (Wireless) will also be reporting.

The updates are likely to be particularly relevant to applications with regard to the increasingly specific profiles for industrial automation, automotive and aviation. The standard updates will be supplemented by focus presentations on individual sub-standards, for example on redundancy mechanisms (IEEE 802.1CB) and their use, as well as practical considerations of various shaper mechanisms. A bridge will also be built to Single Pair Ethernet, which is increasingly coming into focus in the TSN context.

Testing and testbeds

An interoperable communication ecosystem can only work if cross-vendor testing is an integral part of development from the outset. This insight has led to various testbeds and organizations that look at different aspects of TSN. In addition to the updates from the individual testbeds, increasingly available systematic test procedures, tools and practical experience are also presented.

Convergent technologies

As in the context of standardization, the technologies related to TSN are also coming to the fore in the technical presentations. There is a clear focus on wireless technologies, both with regard to 5G and especially with regard to Wi-Fi-based real-time communication.

Endpoints and open solutions

With regard to TSN endpoints, there is a clear focus on Linux-based approaches. In addition to innovative solutions, practical experience is at the center of interest. Alternative approaches to Linux will be presented for the first time, which is a good indicator of market adaptation. In the context of open solutions, the topic of open configuration will also be addressed alongside the endpoints, which for many is still considered the decisive point for the successful use of TSN.

Applications

True to the motto of this year's conference 'TSN in Practise', the event will focus in particular on applications. The spectrum ranges from aerospace in the keynote speech to industrial applications and the medical sector. In addition to specific use cases, broader topics such as edge computing and digital transformation will also be addressed.
