ABB was able to improve basic orders in all regions in the fourth quarter. By contrast, major orders declined due to timing effects, resulting in a drop in order intake in the Americas, the Middle East and Africa. In Europe, order intake was slightly down on the same quarter of the previous year, with orders for rail and maritime transportation coming from Sweden and Finland in particular. Incoming orders also fell on the American continent. This was due to a quarter-on-quarter decline in major orders in the energy technology business in the USA and Canada, which is related to timing effects. In contrast, basic orders increased in the region. China, India and Japan also reported growth in orders. In contrast, ABB recorded a decline in order intake in the Middle East and Africa. The reason for this is the decline in major orders in the oil and gas sector.
