9 Intelligent traffic lights, NRW

Martin Gluch from the Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences in Krefeld has developed an 'intelligent' traffic light that solves a shortcoming in road safety: as soon as you have the sun behind you, you can hardly tell what color the traffic light is displaying. The LEDs that the latest traffic lights have are not a solution for Gluch either. Their disadvantage: at night, when no sunlight shines on the traffic lights, the lights continue to shine with the same brightness. The bright LED light dazzles drivers and causes unnecessary strain on the human eye. Gluch has designed a light module that automatically adjusts to the ambient brightness and can be integrated into existing traffic light systems at low cost. In his prototype, each module acts independently and works with the existing 230 V signal.
