The head and tail of the dragonfly have four further degrees of freedom. Four electrical muscles made of nitinol - a special nickel-titanium alloy - are built into the body. The so-called Shape Memory Alloys (SMAs) contract when heated and expand again when cooled. According to Festo, the supply of electricity creates an ultra-light actuator that moves the head horizontally and the tail vertically.
