The 'Roberta' safety multi-camera gripper from Gomtec is an electrically operated gripper with an integrated stereo camera system. It is based on the VC6210 nano cube dual from Vision Components, which was custom-designed for Gomtec on the basis of standard components. The two 1/3-inch CMOS sensors of the intelligent camera are housed in compact protective housings measuring 22 mm × 22 mm × 22.5 mm, offer a resolution of 572 × 480 pixels and can record 55 images per second. The camera performs all image processing tasks independently and without an external PC - in this application, a 700 MHz processor from Texas Instruments is used for this purpose. Image recognition and image processing are therefore carried out completely 'on board' in the gripping system. Thanks to the simultaneous image capture of the two sensors, 3D measurements are also possible. The camera system also integrates four adjustable light sources, automatic, dynamic light range and intensity regulation, infrared light sources to reduce interference from ambient light and interchangeable camera lenses with different depths of field.
