Pioneering idea: using the time spent shopping to recharge your own electric vehicle. The German discounter Aldi Süd has put this into practice and was rewarded with the eCarTec Award 2015.

In the 'Sustainable product & mobility concept' category, Aldi Süd beat off the competition with its "Sonne tanken" project. This is a publicly accessible charging network for electric vehicles and electric bicycles at around 50 Aldi Süd store locations. Charging is free of charge, requires no registration and can be done conveniently while shopping. The electricity for the charging stations comes from the photovoltaic systems installed on the roofs of the stores during the hours of sunshine. The fast charging stations offer a range extension of up to 80 km for electric vehicles and up to 8 km for electric bicycles in 30 minutes.
