Embedded systems used in cyber-physical systems or Industry 4.0 applications must have highly developed network interfaces and sophisticated security modules. However, application-neutral services that operate as a virtual infrastructure between the individual networked system components are also required to implement the system functions. Such middleware can run directly on embedded systems or on a central server in the cloud. With
SSV/EMW, SSV has developed a platform that uses the cloud-based approach to integrate embedded systems with limited resources. The central functional unit is a server that is connected to all embedded systems of an application via SSL/TLS or AES security. This server has a communication and relationship manager that enables both remote control and individual software updates for all embedded systems. The server software also offers various services for real-time and long-term data storage. Backend interfaces are available for these services in order to integrate embedded system data into smartphone and HMI applications or to implement service-oriented architectures. The middleware platform also enables horizontal communication relationships between networked systems, such as those required by the DKE Industry 4.0 standardization roadmap for decentralized production processes.
