Nicolas Scheidig (l.) and Gabriel Salg received the German Chancellor's prize for the most original work for a remedy for bad breath - and an invitation to the 23rd European competition for young researchers. The two researchers are combating the main cause of bad breath - hydrogen sulphide and its methyl compounds - with so-called cyclodextrins. These are made from starch, contain absorbents and are approved as food additives. Rinsing with the aqueous cyclodextrin solution makes mouth and garlic odors disappear.
