The Biometric Credit Bureau, which was awarded 6,000 euros in the ICT start-up competition, is the first digital credit information database for the African microfinance sector. The Frankfurt-based founders have developed software that allows the data of borrowers in Africa to be recorded and stored in a central database for the first time for the purpose of exchanging credit information. To this end, local microfinance institutions are equipped with tablets on which the software runs. These tablets are also equipped with a fingerprint reader, which can be used to identify the borrowers accurately. The institutions can monitor their loan portfolio in real time and check the creditworthiness of individual customers. As the repayment of installments must be confirmed by both parties using a fingerprint, the customer can also be sure that their payment is properly registered.
