Last but not least, robotics is also increasingly finding its way into medical technology. An active orthosis can help with paralysis, for example: a kind of exoskeleton that takes over the work of muscles and tendons. The Fraunhofer IPA has developed such a special elbow orthosis. It is strapped to the upper and lower arm and, with its 40-watt motor, develops enough power to cope with most everyday tasks. Its weight of just under one and a half kilograms makes it easy for the wearer to handle. And even healthy people can benefit from the high-tech component by giving them extra strength. Lifting heavy parts in a factory for hours on end - no problem for a 'superman' equipped in this way.
