Where exactly is our robot? Johannes Bier (19), David Lippner (18) and Julian Mock (16) near Überlingen faced this basic problem of localizing autonomous vehicles. They wanted to equip their self-built robot so that it could determine its position automatically. To do this, they relied on the interaction of measurement data from a laser scanner with odometric data - a method for estimating the position with a rotary encoder for the wheel drive. Their programming is based on the open source software ROS, which provides navigation tools. With the help of the laser scanner, the robot is able to create a map of its surroundings and move to selected destinations.
