MRI scans are usually as loud for patients as a rock concert. Thanks to Dr. David Grodzki's inventions, things are now much quieter. The Siemens Healthineers scientist is working on new processes that improve cross-sectional images, shorten imaging times or - according to one of his most outstanding inventions - make the experience more pleasant for patients by reducing the typical noise of magnetic resonance imaging scanners by up to 97%. The noise is caused by the rapid switching on and off of the magnetic fields, whereby the gradient coil distorts or stretches minimally at short, rhythmic intervals - and the shape of the tomograph amplifies the noise like a loudspeaker. Grodzki solves the problem with new sequences with which the fields are switched more gently and thus significantly lower forces act in the gradient coils.
