Media module MM9922VD from Siemens
© Siemens
The MM992-2VD (Variable Distance) media module from Siemens enables the use of two-wire cables such as Profibus cabling for Ethernet connections. Additional hardware such as modems is not required. The media module can be used to transmit data up to a maximum of 1000 m. The bandwidth depends on the length and quality of the cable. As a rule, bandwidths of 100 Mbit/s can be realized at a distance of 500 m and bandwidths of 10 Mbit/s for cables of 1000 m in length. The cable is connected to the media module via an RJ45 plug. Users can use the media module with all modular switches from the "Scalance X-300" product family as well as with the "Scalance S627-2M" security module. The media module can be used to quickly convert an existing cable infrastructure in machines and systems into an Ethernet network. The media module can also be used within Ethernet networks to extend the Ethernet cable length defined in the standard at 100 Mbit/s bandwidth. Remote network subscribers that are more than 100 m away can be integrated into system networks over distances of up to 300 m via standard copper cables for Ethernet when using the media module.
