AI performance will double every six months
The development of computers was determined by Moore's Law, according to which the performance of chips doubles every 18 months. Microsoft CEO Nadella predicts even faster development for AI.
Berlin (dpa) - The performance of systems with artificial intelligence will double every six months, according to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella. This explosive increase is due to a combination of computing power and the way in which data is used both before and after AI training, Nadella said at a company event in Berlin. Improved algorithms would also contribute to the increase in performance.
Nadella drew a comparison with Moore's law, which is named after Intel co-founder Gordon Moore. Moore predicted back in the 1960s that the number of transistors on a computer chip would double approximately every 18 months. This law had far-reaching consequences for technological development: computers became more and more powerful without increasing in physical size. In addition, the manufacturing costs per transistor fell, making technology more affordable.
The dream of computer science
"It was as clear as day that 'Moore's law' and the Intel architecture would basically change everything," the Microsoft CEO recalled in Berlin at the start of his own professional career. "One of the dreams of computer science was that we could have computers that understand us instead of us having to understand computers." The natural user interface is something that has always been worked towards. With the new AI models, this goal has been achieved.
With products such as "Co-Pilot", Microsoft is one of the world's leading providers of AI solutions, partly because Nadella has personally promoted close cooperation with the Californian start-up OpenAI.

Nadella announced in Berlin that Thyssenkrupp Automation Engineering plans to be the first company to use Siemens Industrial Copilot worldwide. The Siemens solution is an AI-powered assistant designed to improve automation and efficiency in industrial processes. It is based on generative artificial intelligence from Microsoft and OpenAI and aims to optimize collaboration between humans and machines.
