Five CISO forecasts for 2024

As the year draws to a close, security and IT professionals are turning their attention to preparations for the year ahead: they offer five key predictions for 2024 that are significant against the backdrop of a dynamic cyber threat landscape.

1. security and IT leaders prioritize AI solutions for cyber threat management

As context-based asset intelligence is a prerequisite for modern security programs, the confidence gained has quickly opened up the ability to manage security operations at scale. Combined with the increasing automation of cyber-attacks and the challenges of budget and availability, intelligent orchestration and hyper-automation will be a top priority in 2024 and offer significant benefits.

2. optimal use of generative AI through operational intelligence and a safety-oriented mindset

With established governance, all industries will adopt GenAI solutions in 2024 to enhance security, technology and business functions, Armis continues. Data models and operational intelligence will become even more important to inform models and achieve the desired outcomes. Secure integration while respecting data protection and intellectual property is key, as neglect can lead to serious data loss.

3. companies modernize programs to strengthen security awareness.

Due to the increased use of GenAI by threat actors, the value of traditional security training will quickly diminish. Companies should therefore revise their corresponding programs to integrate continuous, individualized controls. The goal should be to improve the ability to detect and defend against modern social engineering attacks and provide real-time guidance to users to avoid inadvertently falling victim to such attacks.

4. technically sophisticated cyber attacks with fake voice and/or video content

In 2024, technically sophisticated attacks using fake voices and/or video content will become a reality due to the ease of use of underlying tools. Cybercriminals can now impersonate any person to steal money from companies with minimal effort. According to Armis, persuading data administrators to disclose sensitive information is also set to increase. Overall, attackers will use targeted deepfakes to obtain money and information, which can lead to high-profile security breaches and serious losses.

5 New CISO talent will positively impact organizations and the cybersecurity industry

The burnout of CISOs and the increasing attacks on companies will lead to a huge change in the CISO role in 2024. Many will leave their traditional positions, including retirements and moves to other vendors. Deputy CISOs will be given the opportunity to take on key roles, which will have a positive long-term impact on the industry. Moving experienced resources into formative positions will drive technology alignment with business value. This will bring fresh talent and perspectives into leadership positions to change outdated approaches.

As security and IT professionals prepare for the year ahead, it's critical that they can identify, protect and manage their entire attack surface to continuously protect their business-critical assets from cyber threats. As Curtis Simpson, CISO of Armis, says, 2024 will show the importance of balancing innovation and security.
