Eaton has launched the intrinsically safe (IS) Ethernet interface MTL ExLAN as part of the 'Crouse-Hinds' series. According to the supplier, the interface enables OEMs to simplify their product design and certification. This allows them to save the time and costs associated with introducing products that are installed in Zone 0 or 1 hazardous areas, while offering the benefits of an open Ethernet. The interface provides compatible IS signal parameters to enable the networking of various IS Ethernet devices. Signals can be sent securely via copper or fiber optic cable or wirelessly via Ethernet. The interface is suitable for data acquisition applications for process control and monitoring in sectors such as the oil and gas, pharmaceutical, chemical and mining industries. The module provides the essential LAN interface for standard Cat 5e/Cat 6 Ethernet cabling systems and also specifies a clamping voltage for the main supply rail of the equipment (typically 5V or 3.3V). This keeps the generated Ethernet signals at low IS levels.
