According to the digital association Bitkom, 51% of all companies in Germany have fallen victim to digital industrial espionage, sabotage or data theft. At 61%, medium-sized companies (100 to 499 employees) are the most likely to suffer cyber attacks. According to Bitkom, SMEs are a "particularly lucrative target" for cyber criminals. The reason: they offer innovative products and have a strong international position in their market segment. As suppliers, they are firmly anchored in the supply chains of large corporations, but do not have the same means of defense against cyber attacks as large companies.
