The winner of the third Hugo Geiger Prize, endowed with 2,000 euros, Yannick Bantel from the Fraunhofer Institute for Interfacial Engineering and Biotechnology, is getting to grips with fungal pathogens. His protein-protein interaction analysis forms an important foundation for the development of possible cures for the fungal pathogen Candida Albicans, which, according to Fraunhofer, claims more than 10,000 lives every year in Germany alone. Bantel identified previously unknown interactions. His analyses could help in the development of potential therapeutics. Bantel's work demonstrates the potential of the extended genetic code for medical and industrial biotechnology.
