The 'Quasimodo' student team from Saarland University made it to the top of the winners' podium in the 'iCan 2013' competition: The students focused their development on people with back problems. The microsystem is based on
six-axis angle sensors that are used in cell phones, among other things. They record the position of the spine, head, shoulders and hips and evaluate the data obtained. In the event of incorrect posture or excessive passivity (e.g. due to sitting for too long), the system sends the wearer a message and gives them the opportunity to correct it. The team received prize money of 2,000 US dollars (equivalent to around 1,500 euros) for this development in Barcelona.
