... in intelligent transportation networks. "Within these networks, it communicates with other cars and the infrastructure. In this way, traffic flows can be organized more efficiently and traffic jams and accidents can be avoided," explains Dirks. For example, a car is notified within milliseconds if a car in front has rear-ended another car - so it can brake automatically. According to the survey, 86 percent of respondents believe that there will be significantly fewer traffic accidents in ten years' time thanks to networked safety systems. Another 87 percent believe that many safety-relevant functions based on networked systems will be mandatory for new vehicles. One example is the planned e-call system in the EU. From 2018, all new vehicles are to be equipped with an emergency call system. Sensors in the car will detect an accident and automatically report information such as the exact location to an emergency call center.
