Wind farms off the coast supply more and more climate-friendly electricity every year. The technology for this renewable power generation has improved rapidly in recent years. Inventor Arwyn Thomas from Siemens Gamesa has made a significant contribution to this. He works on direct drive wind turbines, which have no gearbox and convert the power of the rotor directly into electricity via a generator. These large offshore wind turbines have only been able to be produced profitably for just under ten years. The 36-year-old inventor has helped to double the torque of the generator in a 6-megawatt offshore turbine.
