This has now been successfully tackled by researchers from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (Darpa): surgeons placed an electrode directly in the area of the brain responsible for movement in a test subject. They blindfolded the test subject and touched the fingers of the artificial hand individually. The subject recognized which finger had been tapped. Dr Justin Sanchez, neuroscientist and manager of the 'Revolutionizing Prosthetics' research project, presented this experiment at the Darpa Technology Forum in September 2015.
