Lukas Stockner (18) from Reischach near Altötting is on the trail of rays of light and received the "Prize for exceptional work by the Federal President" for his work. He dealt with the question of how a beam of light propagates in a certain environment and how it is reflected by objects. These are key questions if you want to create computer graphics that look as realistic as real photos. A particular challenge here is the scattering of light, which occurs, for example, when sunlight shines through a carafe full of wine. In order to simulate such effects as realistically as possible, Stocker used a special mathematical statistical method in his research work. The result is amazingly realistic images of filled glasses and transparent gemstones.
