Some canals are so narrow that humans cannot inspect them. Tim Grutzeck (17) from Hohen Neuendorf built and programmed a robot to explore a 231-metre-long, non-flushable stormwater sewer in his home region. The young researcher chose a design with six legs so that the robot can climb safely over obstacles. A Kinect sensor on a three-limbed arm is used for orientation in unknown areas. This combination of laser and camera can detect and image objects and measure distances. The data is processed into a 3D map of the surroundings. It also makes it easier to calculate the movement paths for the legs.
