Lithium-ion batteries in electric cars are large, heavy and also harmful to the environment due to some of their ingredients. Amandus Krause (17), Benedikt Alt-Epping (15) and Lara Sophie Grabitz (17) wanted to find out whether there are better and more environmentally friendly alternatives. They experimented by comparing self-made lithium-ion, dual-graphite and nickel-cadmium batteries in remote-controlled model cars. Their result: the lithium-ion battery clearly came out on top in terms of range, voltage and specific capacity. Nevertheless, the three young researchers believe that further developments of the dual-graphite battery - especially the version with three carbon electrodes - are worthwhile, as such a battery would be particularly cost-effective and environmentally friendly.
