When servicing rail vehicles, technicians have to deal with up to 200 interconnected control devices from different manufacturers. Previously, this meant that they had to carry up to 20 different cables with them and have up to 60 different software programs installed on their notebooks. Ralf Beyer, system architect at Siemens Mobility in Erlangen, has invented a web-based service for rail vehicles. This allows technicians to virtually enter the individual components of the control system from any Internet-enabled device and "drill down" into the sub-levels until they have discovered the cause of a problem.
