With the help of high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission, the alternating current generated in the wind farms can be converted into low-loss direct current. To do this, several transformer platforms distributed throughout the wind farm transform the alternating current generated before it is converted into direct current by an HVDC platform. It is brought ashore via an undersea cable and converted back into alternating current there. According to Siemens, this is mandatory for cable lengths of 80 kilometers or more, as the transmission losses would otherwise be too high. For the HVDC platform 'HelWin1' that has now been installed, the company states that transmission losses are less than four percent.
