Siemens CEO calls for "respectful dealings with China"
Siemens CEO Roland Busch has warned against a confrontation with the People's Republic of China and called for "respectful interaction".
"China is rightly a very self-confident country. In 20 years, it has lifted a billion people out of poverty and established a veritable middle class," Busch told the Süddeutsche Zeitung (Friday).
Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (Greens) is calling for a tougher stance towards the communist regime in Beijing due to human rights violations. She is calling for an EU import ban on products manufactured using forced labor.
The Siemens CEO said that Baerbock had not yet discussed this issue with him as Chairman of the Asia-Pacific Committee of German Business. Mistakes in China "are not solved by a confrontational foreign policy", said Busch. "If export bans are imposed, this could mean that we can no longer buy solar cells from China - then the energy transition will be over at this point."
He is optimistic that the Greens will advance issues such as traffic, transport, buildings and climate protection, but hopes for a sense of proportion. "Of course, we could phase out coal as early as 2022, but then the lights would go out in Germany," said the Siemens CEO. The electric car also charges "colored electricity, not green. You can only make rapid progress if you are not too dogmatic."
