One year of ChatGPT

Almost a year ago, on November 30, 2022, OpenAI presented the chatbot ChatGPT to the public - a sensation for business and society. IT service provider Adesso has investigated how the application has been received in business.

To what extent has ChatGPT, the tool from OpenAI, changed everyday working life within a year? A survey of 400 managers in Germany during the month of November 2023 was one of the questions asked to answer this question.

The market research company Heute & Morgen, commissioned by Adesso, found that ChatGPT has now achieved awareness levels of over 80%. Furthermore, almost 60% of the managers surveyed have already worked with the application. 75% of those surveyed stated that they were satisfied or even very satisfied with the application. Weak points of the system such as questionable content or fictitious facts (so-called hallucination) do not bother the overwhelming majority.

Recognizable effects on productivity

ChatGPT apparently makes people more productive, they say, as 40% stated that they would save three to five hours of working time per week by using AI. Almost 20% even estimate the effect to be more than five hours per week, be it when writing, brainstorming or analyzing longer texts: OpenAI's chatbot shows an effect on your own work performance. ChatGPT is now part of everyday life for the majority of users. 58% use the application several times a week, almost 15% even several times a day.

Desire for a German alternative to ChatGPT

ChatGPT is backed by OpenAI, a US company. It is reported that 65% of respondents would like to see a comparable GenAI application from a German provider - a great opportunity for companies such as the Heidelberg-based start-up Aleph Alpha, which relies on "AI Made in Germany".

"The findings from the survey are also consistent with our experience," explains Benedikt Bonnmann, Head of Data & Analytics at Adesso. "In the beginning, there was a phase of individual trial and error. Now we are being approached by more and more companies that want to systematically leverage the potential of GenAI. This includes the use of their own data in a secure environment, the development of individual solutions as well as seamless integration into processes and their own IT landscape. This will once again significantly increase the business benefits of the technology. Companies are now setting the course to benefit from GenAI in the future."
