"AI Act"

Andrea Gillhuber,

Germany wants to approve EU law on artificial intelligence

Nothing stands in the way of Germany approving the EU law on the use of AI. Federal Digital Minister Volker Wissing (FDP) said in Berlin on Tuesday that the struggle over Germany's position on the so-called "AI Act" had come to an end with a "workable compromise".

He had campaigned until the end for more innovation-friendly rules and was able to achieve improvements for small and medium-sized enterprises. Disproportionate requirements had been averted.

According to Wissing, the negotiated compromise will now lay the foundations for the development of trustworthy AI. Europe should be developed into an important AI location that can hold its own in global competition.

Stricter rules are to apply to the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the EU in future. Negotiators from the European Parliament and EU member states agreed on corresponding rules in Brussels in December after lengthy negotiations. According to the EU Parliament, this is the world's first AI law.

Artificial intelligence usually refers to applications based on machine learning, in which software searches through large amounts of data for matches and draws conclusions from them. They are already being used in many areas. For example, such programs can evaluate computer tomography images faster and with greater accuracy than humans. Self-driving cars also try to predict the behavior of other road users in this way. And chatbots or automatic playlists from streaming services also work with AI.

The EU Commission proposed the law in April 2021. According to this, AI systems are to be divided into different risk groups. The higher the potential risks of an application, the higher the requirements should be. The hope is that the rules will be copied worldwide.
