"We will need 'green sources' on a massive scale: Countries from which we can importCO2-neutral energy sources," said the President of the Federation of German Industries (BDI) at the Ludwig Erhard Center in Fürth on Tuesday. "This must be the focus of ecological climate foreign economic policy."

"Hopefully Ms. Morgan knows this and hopefully she can do it," he said, referring to Jennifer Morgan, who had been appointed to the Federal Foreign Office by Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (Greens) as Special Envoy for International Climate Policy.

Germany has been an energy importing country for more than 100 years and will remain so as long as it is an industrialized country. In 2021, 71% of gross energy demand was imported. With the maximum expansion of renewable energies and all improvements in efficiency, it might be possible to reduce this figure to 60 or 55.

In view of Russia's attack on Ukraine, Russwurm had previously spoken out in favor of overcoming dependence on Russian energy as quickly as possible.

In terms of security policy, the expansion of imports ofCO2-neutral energy is associated with opportunities and risks, according to Russwurm: In the Gulf states and countries in the Maghreb, there are hundreds of millions of people who live solely from the export of fossil fuels.

"We are currently telling them that we don't want to buy anything from them in 23 years' time. And what's more, we will convince the world that it will no longer buy anything from them in 23 years' time," said Russwurm. "In terms of security policy, these countries need some answers now." Germany wants to become climate-neutral by 2045, i.e. only emit as many greenhouse gases as can be reabsorbed.
